Employment

The Michigan Tech Lode is looking for people interested in working for our newspaper in 2010-2011 as writers, photographers, copy editors, story artists and more. Before applying through the form at the bottom of this page, please check out some frequently asked questions from potential Lode employees.

1. Are there requirements to be on the staff?

The only eligibility requirements we have on our staff is that you are a full-time student enrolled at Tech with a GPA higher than 2.0. Already, our organization has a diverse staff of all backgrounds from engineering to STC and social sciences. All are welcome and encouraged to join.

2. Do I need previous experience in journalism, writing, editing, design or photography?
Absolutely not. Although we appreciate students with the abilities already, we do not require previous experience. We work hard with all staff members to bring out their potential in their respective positions.

3.  Are positions paid?
As our paper brings in revenue from advertising clients, we do pay our staff. As stated in our employee manual, “All positions on the Lode are jobs: this is not an extracurricular activity.” The pay is determined by the effort and the position. Writers can be paid anywhere from $5 to $30 per story. Photographers will receive $3 to $8 per photo assignment. Editors are paid a weekly salary that can range from $30 to $90 base pay without factoring in articles or other contributions.

4. What is the time commitment like?
This all depends on the position and the skills. We encourage our staff to put in the appropriate time to produce a newspaper with award-winning quality content each week. However, we also understand that classes are a priority. Many of our staff members enjoy a healthy school career with exemplary grades along with their efforts to contribute excellent material to our paper.

5. Why should I join the Lode?
For hundreds of reasons! There are many skills you may not know you have until you find and have to use them. At the Lode, we help you bring out these skills and work hard to help you find your potential. Once you have attained these, they are a valuable asset in the journey to the future. Creating a diverse character for your career search is often a huge key for finding a job. Combinations such as engineers who write for our publication or business and finance major who have experience working ad sales tend to stick out when being reviewed by potential employers. This advantage, we feel, is one thing we have to offer. Also, positions are paid. This comes in handy as we are all struggling college students. Any work you contribute will come with a byline, which brings great recognition across campus. It is exciting to see your work and know that it is being presented to a 3000+ audience weekly. Finally, the experience is fun! Be a part of one of the biggest organizations on campus. Find yourself in your new skills, new faces and be a part of an experience that produces an award-winning paper – the Michigan Tech Lode.
