Culture Shock: Report 2

How were your holiday, Huskies? I’m so happy that I can stay and keep sharing my experience with you guys.

As we all know, China has the largest population in the world. There are more than 1.4 billion people living in my country, which has less land than America. Although it’s not that crowded, we still lost a lot of chances to get close to the Mother Nature. I had an awesome camping night last Saturday, which I have a lot to talk about.

I had a chance to camp on Agate Beach with FYE Hall last weekend. When we arrived there, the sun was setting and making it foggy on the Lake Superior. I haven’t seen such amazing scenery before. It’s just blow my mind when I stood in front of it. Besides the FYE Hall, the beach was kind empty. I sat on a log and watched those freshman kids playing football and frisbee. I just felt the time was coagulated. My heart was so peaceful, which made me forget all my worries temporarily.

This was not my first time to be on a beach. I went to couple famous beaches in south of China with my parents. Those beaches were so crowded that the only thing you can do is lay down on it. The water was extremely hot because they’re always overload travelers. I can never cool down myself like I did on Agate Beach.

Later that evening, we put a campfire on the beach. I did barbeque before, but never put a raw hotdog through a branch. Temperature went down a little bit at evening and I felt so warm when I got close to fire. Another thing I ate is called s’mores. We have marshmallow in China too, but I don’t know there are so many different ways to eat it. My friend did an example for me. Pick up a long enough branch and make it through a marshmallow. Then, put the melting marshmallow between two cookies or biscuits. It tasted just like normal biscuit, but sweeter.

We spent rest of night around the campfire. One of the residents in FYE kept adding wood into the fire, which made us feel very hot. I hope those people slept on beach warm enough since all the wood was burnt. We also played guitar, sang songs, and told own stories to the whole group.

I think the best part for camping is that you can sleep outside instead your dorm. It was my second time to sleep in a tent. What’s more, I slept with 2 guys and 5 girls! We didn’t come back to tent until 1 o’clock in the next day morning. Everyone has their own sleeping bag. Although we had a very big tent, it was still kind of crowded to have 8 people in it. I even didn’t have space to turn my body around to find a comfortable position.

When I’m writing this article, I feel I’m having a movie about this camping in my brain. This is my first time to stay so close to the nature. We do have some wild nature parks in China, but I never have a chance to go there. In America, especially in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, it only takes 40 minutes to get the beach. I feel so fortunate that I came to Michigan Tech to have my college life.
