Comedian Chris Mata touches on issues ranging from redneck bashing to baby punting
“This show isn’t about sex!” he says boastfully. “It’s about being racist and kicking babies!” As expected, boisterous laughter followed.
If you were not a part of the boisterous laughter, you were not part of Chris Mata’s comedy act on Friday night in the MUB. Mata was the first comedian to be featured by SACS, the Student Activities Comedy Series, which provides late night entertainment to students. SACS will be providing Michigan Tech students comedy throughout the year with four comics arriving in the fall and four more in the spring.
While the show wasn’t entirely about sex, it was the way Mata began it. He shared with the audience how he didn’t want children but ended up with one anyway. He talked about how women could be human condoms and how he associated children with STDs. “You can’t hug your herpes,” he commented.
The discussion then turned to children in general. He talked about the bald spot on his son’s head and how fascinating it was. “Sometimes I pet him just to feel it,” he said excitedly.
The show then went down the ally of racism and racial slurs. It began innocently as Mata commented on how he enjoyed the black woman in the cartoon “Tom and Jerry.” It then ventured on to how he jokes with his diverse group of friends to how ignorant the state of Texas is.
“I once asked my dad about why Puerto Ricans hate Mexicans,” he said. “My dad said it was because the Puerto Ricans had to swim, and we got to walk.”
Mata also commented on politics, the Olympics and some MTU students. That is to say we discussed the legs on a female student and compared the hairiness of the chests of two male students.
Mata also commented on how involved the audience was. “You guys are so attentive and jovial,” he said animatedly.
Although Mata was a bit vulgar and performed some jokes that can be seen on YouTube, the first SACS show of the year was a hit. With such comic audience participation, candid humor and a show that ran for an hour and a half, the next comedian that comes to town (Chad Daniels on Oct. 10) will have rise above the bar that Chris Mata has set to continue the “MTU comedic experience.”
