It is that time of the semester once again when Michigan Tech citizens open their doors and hearts to welcome students accompanied with their families to experience our University over a one-day course. I’m talking about the Michigan Tech Open House happening this Saturday, Sept. 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This is a time for prospective students to visit campus, check out majors and life at Tech, interact with faculty and students and tour the campus. For those of you who did go on a campus tour before deciding on your university, I am sure you know how important this step is.
Open House is one of the biggest recruiting events for Tech. Last year alone, Open House saw about 350 students, and about 230 of them enrolled. The goal of the program is to give students the opportunity to see all that Michigan Tech has to offer, from experiential learning programs such as Enterprise to undergraduate research, senior design, co-ops and internships, student life experiences and campus community. According to Allison Carter, Director of Admissions, as of last week, we are expecting 270 prospective students registered to attend. With family members, there should be between 750-850 total people on campus for the event.
Wondering what you can do as a student to make this event happen? First up, there are many volunteer opportunities during the day, from setting up to assisting during sessions or helping visitors find their way around campus. Second, the students visiting will be having lunch at the residence halls, so if you want to tell them what a great experience you have had here at Michigan Tech, walk up, say hello and share your story. Of course, just smiling at visitors will be the best thing you could do. From previous years, we have always received comments about how friendly and helpful we are.
So remember, if you see someone looking confused and lots trying to figure out how to find their way in the Memorial Union Building or just around campus, be sure to stop and help out. For more information on the event or to help out as a volunteer, contact the Admissions Office or visit
