Nudity in the United States is treated as a secretive and mysterious object of interest. Many American children’s eyes are hidden from nudity. We are taught at a young age that nudity is shameful and incorrect. To be nude or to see nudity is to provide such negative feelings as embarrassment, being trespassed against and guilty of poor conduct. Although, I am sure many of us can recall that being naked was quite comfortable as a child. If left to our own devices, I am sure that nudity would remain a comfortable aspect of daily living within a family. However, parental nudity is discussed as being a form of child abuse.
I think it is important to differentiate here. Because nudity has become only a sex symbol in the United States, it has somehow lost definition of being natural. Of course we have naturalists that are in favor of parental, or I might say “friendly,” nudity and being comfortable nude with people whom are close in friendship. In our current society, even though a woman may be told to stop breast-feeding in public, women choose to harness their breasts with wired bras and low cut shirts. The intention behind the nudity – and yes, I consider cleavage nudity – the only nude part of the breast is not the nipple is what causes the controversy. Instead of taking the time, because we do have the time, to consider the idea or intention behind a certain case of nudity, our majority has instead clumped all nudity into one group filed under unacceptable. The most widely viewed nudity in college is porn. Porn is something of average day pleasure. The need to watch porn may be because of a lack of stimulation and pleasure. I am under the impression that this lack can be attributed at least partially to how American children are raised to think about nudity and without a core set of values. As I mentioned in another one of my articles, I believe there should be some ethic taught in high school… any sort of mythology or significant history to instill a seed of thought in humanity. I do believe that the sexual conduct of our younger adults is frightening and would impede or affect a child. The sort of nudity that gets all nudity in trouble is that type found in porn. The theme of some porn videos is very degrading and in my opinion incorrect.
For instance, Girls Gone Wild has made numerous videos filming random young females. Not that I mind the nudity, but the demeanor with which the women approach the situation is to be sexually appealing. Because there is such an apparent need for “adult” nudity it is wanted on television. Then comes the need for censoring and shielding of children’s eyes. Why is it appropriate for adult’s eyes and not for children? If this horrendous nudity is to be part of adult life, then surely the child should be introduced to it and told exactly what it is. Our default way around this is to simply say nudity equals bad! It makes more sense to correctly inform children. If they are treated like they are naive and ignorant, then they probably will end up that way. Children are very capable of complex thought. In fact, they learn very rapidly. We cannot avoid how America is evolving. Young girls enjoy flaunting their “stuff.” Having multiple sexual partners is very common, and in fact, it is probably almost 100 percent of our population. I expect it to be so with how our culture has turned. Some “sexual experts” even encourage having multiple partners so you can “get a feel” or “know what you want.” Sex has become an item instead of a bond. Even though it is our instinct to procreate, we are still capable of intelligent thought and have the faculty to overcome behaviors that end in sorrow or anger.
Ultimately, nudity is something that should be discussed. A naked human body can be very beautiful. If we are so comfortable with others in our species, then natural nudity should not be something shunned and seen as offensive or naughty. Our culture must learn to differentiate and understand nudity instead of seeing it as indulgence and as only associated with sexual activity – especially that of inappropriate sexual activity.

Bravo well said I concur completly. Thank you for writting this thoughtful insightful piece. I must admit to being a bit biased though as I am a naturist/nudist and I enjoy outdoor nudity either in my own backyard or garden or at a nude beach or at a private club with other like minded folks. I think it also serves to offer a more realistic look at the nude human form and thus allow us to accept our bodies and be less critical of our own.
Nudity is rather like sex. It is something which is beautiful in context, i.e. in intimate circumstances, but not something you should want to share with strangers, and not something strangers generally want to see.
The human body can be beautiful, but it can also be quite repulsive. Besides, the difference between nudity and, say, beach wear is that the genitals and buttocks are in view with the former, and I don’t know many people who think those particular features of human anatomy are beautiful!
You say “Our culture must learn to differentiate and understand nudity instead of seeing it as indulgence and as only associated with sexual activity”. No thanks. I am quite happy with my culture as it is and I have no desire to change it to suit the preferences of what is, essentially, a small minority of nudists, hippies and exhibitionists.
Thanks for the great thoughts. Our culture teaches us that nudity equals sex. That is not true (although sex is best enjoyed while nude). Nudity is about freedom, body acceptance and acceptance of who we are. I am a relatively new nudist living in the UP. I am basically a home nudist, but have visited a nudist resort in lower Michigan. I occasionally find remote and secluded areas to hike and enjoy nature nude. I find nudity to be a natural experience for me and try to be nude as often as possible in the appropriate setting. I challenge everyone to spend more time nude in the privacy of your home and see how it changes your thinking.
Alan and Sparks, I am glad to have represented both of you in the article. I definitely understand the desire to be without attire, especially outside (skinny dipping, haha)… it is interestingly liberating.
Bisonex, the quote you outlined was not aimed that everyone should accept nudists or run around nude, it was the summing line to the entire point of the article, which you may have missed.
Wasn’t going to post in here cause the article and responses were old but now that someone else did recently.
Great article. Nudity is very much too linked to sex any more. its nice to be able to just strip down every so often. either alone or with some of the more accepting friends and what not.
Oh and just teeshirt is awesome too…
I can tell this is a tech school. This is the worst written article I have ever read and it could have been so much more
