With all 15 players healthy for the first time since November, the Huskies chemistry may finally be coming together. Two road losses against Grand Valley, in which the team “lacked everything” according to coach Kevin Luke, and Ferris, in which the team was much improved, left a bitter taste in the Huskies’ mouths.
Michigan Tech started out of the gates sluggish in Allendale, and the GLIAC North-leading Lakers took full advantage, jumping out to an 18-6 lead over the first nine minutes. Michigan Tech fought back to cut the lead to five in just two minutes with two Erik Stephens’ threes and a Mike Hojnacki free throw. Unfortunately, that’s about all the Huskies could muster. A Tyler Molesworth free throw is all that Michigan Tech could add for the remainder of the first half, and the Huskies entered the halftime break trailing 31-14.
The Huskies battled hard to start the second half, keeping the Grand Valley lead steady around 17 points, but they were never able to cut the lead to less than 15. The Lakers bumped the lead over 20 with 12 minutes remaining, and they led by as many as 25 before Michigan Tech battled it back to the same 17-point halftime margin when all was said and done; Lakers winning 59-42.
It looked like the Huskies learned their lesson against Grand Valley, as they stormed out of the gates against Ferris State, jumping out to an early 11-4 lead. The Bulldogs quickly settled down, though, rattling off the next eight points before the all-out dogfight ensued. There were six lead changes before Ferris closed out the first half with a small run to take a 41-35 lead into the intermission.
Michigan Tech dug themselves an early hole just five minutes into the second frame, handing the Bulldogs an 11-point lead. Again, the Huskies fought back, cutting the lead to four, before Ferris State kept responding, maintaining a three-plus point lead until the final minute. A Don Fowler three made it a single possession game with 54 seconds left, but he was unable to drain another three moments later, and Ferris iced the game from the free throw line.
