Headless Hitmen pick up important win, outlasting Sea Monsters

The battle for second place in East Wads Conference No. 3 heated up even more after Saturday’s game between the Headless Hitmen and Sea Monsters.  Prior to this game both of these two teams were the scoring leaders of the conference, with the Headless Hitmen registering 36 goals and the Sea Monsters totaling 39.  Both of these teams were given honorable mention for this week’s top 20 power rankings.

In the game’s first period of action both teams would come out firing.  It was fairly early the first period when Headless Hitmen would register the first goal of the game and take an early 1-0 lead.  A few moments later the Hitmen would strike again this time from center ice and the scoreboard read 2-0.  Not to be outmatched, Sea Monsters came out on the attack and notched their first goal towards the middle of the period.  The offenses of both teams would register another goal and the halftime score was 3-2 with the Headless Hitmen leading.

The second period went underway with the Hitmen on the man advantage after a late charging penalty called in the first period.  However, Sea Monsters must have forgotten that they were a player down as they put five players out onto the ice.  This would lead to a penalty for too many players on the ice as well as an illegal substitution call against them.  It would not take long for the Hitmen to take advantage of the 5-on-2 as they would score their fourth goal of the game early into the second period.  With the scoreboard reading 4-2 in favor of the Headless Hitmen, Sea Monsters called a timeout to try and regroup themselves.  This game would remain scoreless until late in the second period when Sea Monsters would bring the game to within one point.  However, it was too late for the comeback as the final score would be 4-3 with Headless Hitmen picking up the victory and improving to 5-1 on the season.  The Sea Monsters dropped their first loss of the season and now stand at 4-1.  The Sea Monsters will be in action again later on tonight and the Lode will be there providing coverage.
