Men’s tennis starts season with two 9-0 victories

Looking for a strong start to the season, the men’s tennis Huskies did just that, posting a pair of 9-0 wins over two Division II squads in Ripon College and Lakeland College. Transfer Luka Stupar had a huge weekend to lead the way.

Stupar cruised to a 6-0, 6-2, win over Ripon’s Jay Hardacre at number one singles. Lakeland’s Andrew McGlashen faired slightly better, but Stupar again emerged victorious, 6-3, 7-5.

At number two singles, Anders Sandholm cruised to victory over Ripon’s Dan Rodriguez without giving up a single game. When facing the NAC’s Player of the Year, Andre Glass, from Lakeland, Sandholm needed a supertiebreaker to earn the 6-0, 3-6, 10-5, win.

Douglas Yossida made short work of Ripon’s number three singles’ player, Alex Tande, without surrendering a game. Against Lakeland’s Jacob Halvorsen, Yossida nearly did the same thing, dropping only a single game in the second set.

Ripon’s Sam Ewig managed to steal a game in each set from Huskies’ number four singles’ player, Chris Verhulst. Yuki Shiono from Lakeland dropped the first set without winning a game, but stormed back to get four games from Verhulst in the second set.

Tim Viola earned a straight set victory against Ripon’s number five singles’ player, Jake Knaapen without giving up a game. Viola nearly did the same to Tom Kuehl from Lakeland, but Kuehl managed to get one game in the first set.

Newcomer Evan Smith lost one game each set to Ripon’s Matthew Rohrbeck at number six singles. Smith had no such trouble from Carlos Millan of Lakeland, as he took both sets with no lost games.

The number one doubles pairing of Stupar and Yossida cruised to an 8-2 win over Hardacre and Rodriguez of Ripon. Against Lakeland’s McGlashen and Halvorsen, the duo earned an 8-3 win.

Viola and Verhulst, the Huskies’ number two doubles squad, earned an 8-0 win over Tande and Ewig of Ripon and an 8-2 victory over Glass and Kuehl of Lakealand.

The third doubles squad of Sandholm and Smith took care of Ripon’s Knaapen and Rohrbeck, 8-0, and Lakeland’s Shiono and Millan, 8-2.
