After a first-round exit from the GLIAC tournament, few people gave the Huskies a chance at even making it to the NCAA tournament. Despite their 14-14 overall record, Michigan Tech did make the tournament after all, locking up the No. 8 seed in the Midwest Regional. Unfortunately, they had to face the No. 1 tournament host, the Indianapolis Greyhounds. While Michigan Tech kept each set of Thursday night’s match close, the Greyhounds improved upon their 35-1 record with a 3-0 victory over Michigan Tech, 25-20, 25-19, 25-20.
“We competed well at times, but when you’re playing a team that’s as solid and consistent as Indianapolis was, we needed to bring a little better game,” said head coach Orlando Gonzalez, who officially wrapped up his first season with Michigan Tech. “We’ve got a better game; unfortunately we didn’t use it tonight. I think the girls fought hard and competed hard, and although it was a 3-0 loss, I thought it was a competitive loss, and I can’t fault them for that.”
The Greyhounds proved to the 550 fans in attendance why they only have one loss this season, putting together a .241 attack percentage compared to Michigan Tech’s .101. Indy’s Kristina Kerrigan led all players with 13 kills, and five other players had three or more kills in the winning effort. Cheneta Morrison put together the only double double of the evening with 31 assists and 15 digs.
Michigan Tech was paced by senior Veronica Armstrong’s 10 kills and a .400 attack percentage. Kristine Sexton, who earned the Huskies only All-GLIAC first team selection, tallied eight kills, but also erred nine times. Madeline Haben concluded her stellar freshman campaign with a 26-assist performance.
Michigan Tech concludes its season with a 14-15 record and will lose four seniors to graduation: Veronica Armstrong, Kaari Nevanen, Alicia Schneider and Alison Greene. Check out mtulode.com/sports/volleyball for a full season recap over Thanksgiving break.
