The Michigan Tech Huskies have struggled to get into the win column and out of the penalty box in recent weeks, but maybe a little home cooking is just what the doctor ordered to right the ship, that is quickly sinking. The Huskies have had one of the toughest schedules in the country, and even though Minnesota has been struggling recently, the Golden Gophers are a national powerhouse for a reason.

After getting badgered at the Kohl Center by No. 16 Wisconsin, the hockey Huskies will finally return home this weekend to “gopher” a couple of wins against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The Gophers are off to an extremely slow start, posting a 4-7-1 record in WCHA play, good for nine points and the eighth spot in the standings.

If the hockey Huskies’ season was a bad two-hour movie, you’d have turned it off after the first 10 minutes. Unfortunately for Huskies’ fans and players, it wasn’t. Instead, the Huskies won just six times all season and only twice after Christmas. To say this was a nightmare scenario barely does the season justice, but there are reasons to look forward to next season.

The hockey Huskies gave it their all this weekend in Grand Forks, N.D., but in the end it wasn’t enough, as they fell just short of forcing a decisive third game for the second straight season, falling to the No. 6 North Dakota Fighting Sioux, 4-3, on Saturday after dropping a 5-1 decision on Friday.

To say it’s been a trying year for head coach Jamie Russell and the hockey Huskies would be an understatement. The Huskies have won just five times in 34 attempts, and as the regular season comes to a close, that task doesn’t get any easier with the No. 18 Minnesota Golden Gophers coming to town. Even worse, after dropping six of their previous eight games, the Gophers took three points from Minnesota-Duluth last weekend.

For the second straight night, the Michigan Tech Huskies took an early first period lead before the No. 15 Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs evened the game at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena en route to a 2-2 tie on Saturday night. With the tie, the Huskies set a new school record with seven ties.“We played to win,” said Huskies’ head coach Jamie Russell. “I challenged the team. Guys stepped up, and we rose to the occasion.”

This weekend, the hockey Huskies play their first home series of the new year as they face No. 17 North Dakota. The Fighting Sioux (13-10-1 overall, 8-5-1 WCHA) currently sit in a tie with the No. 7 Minnesota Golden Gophers for the fourth spot in the WCHA standings with 17 points. The Sioux got there by sweeping the Gophers at home last weekend. The Sioux come in looking for revenge for the loss in the consolation game of the GLI to the Huskies, 2-1.

The hockey Huskies return home to face the No. 8 Denver Pioneers this weekend. The Pioneers currently sit fifth in the WCHA with 11 points after earning a win over the then No. 1 Minnesota Golden Gophers two weeks ago, becoming the first team to do so.

After falling behind early in the first period, the Michigan Tech Huskies (2-8-1) came back to tie the No. 2 rated Minnesota Golden Gophers (5-0-4). They weren’t supposed to be in the game, and through one period it was hard to believe the Huskies could even have a chance.
