The perfect script was written long before the Huskies ever stepped foot in Missouri for the 2010 NCAA Division II Elite Eight. After reaching the Elite Eight last year, this year’s women’s basketball team featured six seniors who led a Husky squad that started the year No. 1 in the polls. After putting together a school record 31 wins and taking the GLIAC and NCAA Midwest Regional Championships, the Huskies looked primed to end the year No. 1 as well.

The Michigan Tech Huskies (31-2 overall, 20-2 GLIAC) will be heading to the NCAA Elite Eight for the second straight season. Last year, the Huskies fell in the first round to Minnesota State Mankato who eventually went on to become the national champion. This year the Huskies hope to get past the first round; standing in their way are the Emporia State Hornets (27-5, 16-4 MIAA). While the Hornets did not make the Elite Eight last year, they still qualified for the NCAA Postseason, falling in the second round to West Texas A&M.

The school-record 3,131 fans that attended the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championship game between the host Michigan Tech Huskies and the Drury Panthers were not disappointed on Tuesday night. Michigan Tech and Drury battled hard, but the Huskies shot a blistering 65 percent from the floor to punch their ticket to St. Joseph, Mo. and the NCAA Elite Eight with an 84-68 victory.

After defeating Northwood (78-52), Lake Superior State (72-43) and Northern Michigan (73-69) for the GLIAC Championship, the Michigan Tech Huskies have earned the right to host the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional tournament this weekend. The Michigan Tech Huskies (28-2 overall, 21-2 GLIAC) have been the host school for the GLIAC Championship for three straight years now. In those three years, the Huskies have also advanced to the championship game each year. Tonight the Huskies met a team that has already proven that they are capable of beating them. Earlier this season the Northern Michigan Wildcats (21-9 overall, 16-6 GLIAC) fell to the Huskies 64-59, but beat them in their second meeting 53-47, in Houghton. With the past behind them, they both entered tonight’s contest with the goal of walking away with the GLIAC Championship. In a contest that was close all the way to the end, the Huskies eventually proved that hard work pays off, as they were crowed the 2010 GLIAC Women’s Champions.

The Huskies entered tonight’s contest with a big victory over Northwood on Tuesday. They owned a 26-2 overall record and looked to add another postseason victory. Meanwhile on the other end of the court, the Lake Superior State Lakers wanted nothing more than to upset the No. 1 seed. Earlier this season, Lake State fell twice to the Huskies with scores of 72-67 and 84-68. This time the outcome proved no different as the Huskies will advance to the GLIAC Championship game for the third straight season with a 72-43 victory.

With a 25-2 regular season behind them, the Huskies’ women’s basketball team began what many are hoping will be a long postseason run. Even though Michigan Tech earned the top seed in the GLIAC Tournament, Tuesday’s quarterfinal opponent, the Northwood Timberwolves, had challenged Michigan Tech to four- and eight-point margins earlier this year. This time was different. The Huskies stormed out of the gates and never looked back, earning a strong 78-52 victory over the injury-depleted T’Wolves.

After suffering just their second loss of the season on Saturday, the Huskies’ women’s basketball team looked to rebound against a Lake Superior State squad that had won four straight games heading into Thursday. Michigan Tech certainly did bounce back, winning 84-68 to improve to 24-2 overall and 19-2 in the GLIAC.

For just the second time this year, both Husky teams lost on the same day. The Hillsdale Chargers handed the women’s team a 68-65 loss, while the Charger men all be eliminated the Husky men from GLIAC tournament contention with a 79-55 win.
