The Matchup
It’s hockey playoff time again and this weekend the Huskies will travel to Denver, CO, to face the top-ranked Pioneers. The Huskies finished the regular season 34 points behind the WCHA Regular Season Champs, but they seem determined to make the tenth playoff meeting between these two an interesting one.

Needing a win to move into third in the WCHA Standings, at least for the time being, the No. 7 North Dakota overcame two hockey Huskies’ power play goals en route to a 3-2 win at the Ralph Engelstad Arena on the final night of the WCHA Regular Season.

Despite trailing for about 13 minutes, the No. 7 North Dakota Fighting Sioux rattled off three goals in 1:19 in the second period to defeat the Michigan Tech Huskies, 5-1. The Huskies struggled without assistant captain Brett Olson for the second straight night.

North Dakota
After dropping back-to-back 5-2 losses to the No. 3 Wisconsin Badgers to end the home portion of their schedule, the Huskies head back out on the road for their final WCHA series of the season against the No. 7 North Dakota Fighting Sioux.
The Sioux (18-11-5 overall, 13-10-3 WCHA) are fresh off a sweep of the Colorado College Tigers, and currently hold the final home playoff spot with 29 points.

The Michigan Tech Huskies were without their top offensive threat, assistant captain Brett Olson, and the loss was apparent almost from the opening faceoff as the No. 3 Wisconsin Badgers outhustled the Huskies to loose pucks and picked up a pair of goals from both Aaron Bendickson and Andy Bohmbach en route to a 5-2 win and the weekend sweep at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

Whether it’s inclement weather or hot goaltending, the No. 3 Wisconsin Badgers have had their share of troubles during their last three trips to Houghton to face the hockey Huskies. Tonight was no exception as the Huskies got superb goaltending from Kevin Genoe, who made 58 saves. The Badgers did manage two power play goals to skate away with a 5-2 win at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

As the 2009-10 WCHA Regular Season comes to a close for the Huskies, they have one last home series against the No. 3Wisconsin Badgers before finishing on the road at No. 8 North Dakota. This means there’s one last chance for fans to see Ryan Bunger, Drew Dobson, captain Malcolm Gwilliam, John Kivisto, Mike VanWagner and Eli Vlaisavljevich before graduation.

Despite trailing early, the No. 2 Denver Pioneers notched four goals in a little over eight minutes to cruise to a 5-3 victory Saturday night over the hockey Huskies, their eighth straight win. Anthony Maiani and Cody Brookwell paced the hosts with two assists each.

Halfway through Friday night’s game, the No. 2 Denver Pioneers were back on their heels as the hockey Huskies pushed them to the brink of an upset and the end of the Pioneers’ current six-game winning streak. Unfortunately the Huskies couldn’t maintain the pressure for 60 minutes, falling 5-2.

After nearly being left for dead by most of the WCHA and much of their own fan base, the hockey Huskies have revived themselves in stunning fashion since Jan. 12, rattling off a 2-4-1 record over their last seven games, including wins over Minnesota State and No. 6 Minnesota-Duluth. The Huskies have earned a much-needed week off to prepare for the No. 2 Denver Pioneers in Denver, CO.
