Hockey Huskies have plenty of room to grow


If the hockey Huskies’ season was a bad two-hour movie, you’d have turned it off after the first 10 minutes. Unfortunately for Huskies’ fans and players, it wasn’t. Instead, the Huskies won just six times all season and only twice after Christmas. To say this was a nightmare scenario barely does the season justice, but there are reasons to look forward to next season.

Hockey season ends in heartbreak


The hockey Huskies gave it their all this weekend in Grand Forks, N.D., but in the end it wasn’t enough, as they fell just short of forcing a decisive third game for the second straight season, falling to the No. 6 North Dakota Fighting Sioux, 4-3, on Saturday after dropping a 5-1 decision on Friday.

Hockey Huskies travel to St. Cloud


The Huskies head out this weekend for their final road series of the WCHA regular season as they face the St. Cloud State Huskies for the first time. St. Cloud (15-13-2 overall, 10-11-1) currently sits tied for sixth in the WCHA with No. 9 Minnesota with 21 points. St. Cloud is coming off a split at Alaska-Anchorage last weekend.

Huskies tie Sioux, Friday


The No. 17 North Dakota Fighting Sioux (13-10-2 overall, 8-5-2 WCHA) were looking for revenge at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena for a loss in the GLI Consolation Game in late December, and it showed as the Sioux jumped all over the Michigan Tech Huskies early on. The Huskies (5-17-3 overall, 1-13-3 WCHA) fought back, and the teams skated away with a 3-3 tie despite being outshot 41-22 Friday night.

Colorado College coming to town for Winter Carnival


After a much-needed week off, the hockey Huskies return to action this weekend against the No. 17 Colorado College Tigers at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena. This weekend is also Winter Carnival, which typically bodes well for Huskies’ fans. The Huskies are 7-4-1 all time on Winter Carnival weekend against the Tigers.

The hockey Huskies battled back from a two-goal deficit and earned themselves a tie for the second straight night against the Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves on Saturday. This time, however, they did manage to get a brief lead, forcing the hosts to battle back and earn the 3-3 tie at the Sullivan Arena.

The state of Huskies’ goaltending


At Michigan Tech, fans have been witness to some of the best goaltending in the WCHA year in and year out. From Dave Roach to Geoff Sarjeant, from Damien Rhodes to Jamie Ram, and in more recent years, from David Weninger to Michael-Lee Teslak, the Huskies have boasted some outstanding talent between the pipes. Of course, in the 21st Century, Huskies’ netminders have seen more pucks than they did back in the 1980s.

Huskies complete successful holiday schedule


While the hockey Huskies aren’t exactly tearing up the WCHA, or even battling for a home playoff spot, the Huskies (5-17-2 overall, 1-13-2 WCHA) may have turned a major corner, going 3-4-1 over the past month. After a pair of drubbings from the No. 7 Denver Pioneers in which they were outscored 12-1 on home ice, the Huskies have recovered and lost both games to the No. 5 Pioneers by a combined three goals last weekend.
