After dropping five straight GLIAC matches, the men’s tennis Huskies head into the GLIAC Tournament riding high after sweeping this past weekend’s matches against Tiffin and Ferris State to finish their regular season 8-8 overall and 2-5 in the GLIAC, good for the sixth-seed this weekend.
With their sixth-seed placement, the Huskies will likely face either Wayne State or Ferris State in their opening match. Both the Warriors and the Bulldogs are 5-1 at this point in GLIAC play with one match to go. The Huskies lost 5-4 to the Warriors on Mar. 26, and 8-1 to Ferris State on Mar. 21.
The Warriors (13-6 overall) are paced by sophomore Bertrand Moulin (19-3 overall) who has posted a 14-2 record in dual matches this season in the number one spot. Senior Britton Steele (5-13 overall) has a 4-12 record in the number two slot. Freshman Thomas Ducret (13-5 overall) has posted a 13-2 record in the number three spot.
The fourth singles player, freshman Oscar Gamarra (9-8 overall) has an 8-7 record in dual matches. Senior Roberto Gomez (9-4 overall) has been the most effective fifth slot player with a record of 5-2 in dual matches. Freshman Jon Groszek (10-3 overall) has a 9-1 record at the number six spot.
For the Bulldogs (9-6 overall), Kyle Revall, a senior, leads the way, having posted a 6-7 record at number singles thus far this season. Classmate Ahmet Demir (7-7 overall) has a 6-6 record at number two singles. Sophomore Jack Swan (9-6 overall) at number three singles is 8-5 in dual matches.
Junior Steven Roberts (11-3 overall) has a 4-2 record at number four singles and a 6-1 record at number five singles. Sophomore Justin Hermes (6-8 overall) is 4-1 at number five singles but is 2-6 in the number four slot. Freshman Tyler Marengo (9-3 overall) is 8-2 in dual matches at number six singles.
Of course, should the Huskies survive their opening match with a win they will likely face No. 15 Northwood in the second round of the tournament. The Timberwolves (8-4 overall, 5-0 GLIAC) are limping a little bit after falling over the weekend to No. 20 Drury, 5-4.
For the Huskies, sophomore Luka Stupar (10-9 overall) continues to play strong tennis, going 8-8 in dual matches at number one singles. Sophomore Anders Sandholm (9-7 overall) is 9-6 at number two singles. Junior David Heuer continues to earn victories at number three singles as he is now 9-4 on the season.
Sophomore Douglas Yossida (9-8 overall) is now 6-6 in dual matches at number four singles. Junior Chris Verhulst (8-8 overall) is 3-0 at number four singles and 5-7 at number five singles. Senior Tim Viola (7-8 overall) has posted a 5-6 record in dual matches this season at number six singles.
The Huskies will be keeping an eye on the final four GLIAC matches over the next few days in order to find out who their first opponent will be. Wayne State faces Northwood on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Ferris State travels to Grand Valley State and Findlay faces Tiffin. Finally, Findlay faces Northwood on Thursday to finish the GLIAC Regular Season Schedule.

As the weather brightens and the semester winds down, students are in desperate need of a change of pace, even if just for a day. How does an afternoon filled with a carnival complete with a Ferris Wheel and a motorcycle show sound? There’ll be plenty of excitement for everyone on campus when Spring Fling arrives on Apr. 16.
The event has a carnival theme to compliment the MUB Board-sponsored Ferris Wheel, which will be spinning on the pavement from noon-7 PM in Lot 5, which is just east of the Rozsa Center. From there you can wander down the hill to the National Society for Leadership and Success (NSLS) cookout, which will be at Prince’s Point from noon-4PM. Even if you don’t want a delicious burger or hot dog, there will also be live acoustic music. Head on down there and enjoy the company of your classmates and the relaxing waves of the Portage Canal. Heading back up the hill and west across campus, you’ll come across the Greek Week Games hosted by IFC & Panhel on the Walker Lawn.
From there, mosey your way across campus to Lot 27 (the pay lot by the MUB) to check out the Full Throttle Motorcycle Show! The show will feature Scott Murray & Sick Air FMX. Murray is an FMX freestyle rider that landed the first double back flip in MotoX history. He’ll be tearing up the lot, captivating onlookers with his tricks and jumps, at noon, 2:30, and 4:00 p.m., and shows will be around 15-20 minutes long.
Booths from various organizations across campus will be scattered around to entertain you, talk to you about their organization, and give you a chance to play some carnival games! Among the organizations attending are HOWL (Healthy Options for a Wellness Lifestyle) and various fraternities and sororities. It’s a great opportunity to get more involved on campus, and to see what might interest you!
And, of course, we’ve saved the messiest for last. If you head over to Lot 15E (between Wadsworth Hall & West McNair) between 9a.m. & 7p.m., you’ll see some mud-slinging, but not the political kind.
Oozeball will be hitting Michigan Tech, yet again, and 40 teams will be digging for the chance to be crowned 2010 Oozeball Champs. For those who’ve never witnessed the messy ordeal first hand, Oozeball is basically just what it sounds like, mud volleyball.
What about after the sun goes down? Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham, NBC’s America’s Got Talent and the Tonight Show with Jay Leno comedian alum, Rob O’Reilly, is going to be making an appearance on campus. The 25-year-old attended Boston University for a while, but in 2005, he put aside “any notions of a ‘normal career’, according to his Myspace.
Also, it appears as if his interests are performing stand-up comedy, basketball, tennis, skiing, and strip solitaire. Keeping these in mind, I would say his performance is bound to be quite an entertaining one.
So there you have it, Apr. 16 is going to be an exciting, fun-filled Friday for all on campus, so make sure to creep out of your dorm rooms and enjoy the beautiful Keweenaw day.

It’s been a strange follow-up season to the men’s tennis Huskies’ first trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Huskies started the season 3-0, dropped two, won two, and dropped one. Things looked good as the Huskies finished their Spring Break trip in Florida with an 8-1 drubbing of the typically strong Indianapolis Greyhounds. Now, though the Huskies (6-8 overall, 0-5 GLIAC) are in the midst of a five-match losing streak after the 6-3 loss to the Lake Superior State Lakers.
The Huskies have struggled so badly during the road portion of their GLIAC schedule, they now sit at the bottom of the conference with just two matches left, Saturday against the Tiffin Dragons and Sunday against the Findlay Oilers. Both matches will be within the friendly confines of the Gates Tennis Center.
The Dragons come into Saturday’s match 4-10 overall and 0-4 in GLIAC play. First-year head coach Phil Conley is still trying to help his squad figure out its identity.
Freshman Luiz Carvalho (6-10 overall) is 5-9 in the number one singles’ spot. Senior Harry Smith has posted a 4-6 record in the number two spot. Sophomore Andres Torres (7-8 overall) has played well in the number three slot, going 5-7 in dual matches thus far. Freshman Leonid Vladimirov (5-11 overall) has struggled in the number four slot, going 3-7. Freshman Brian Coffman (8-8 overall) has been the most successful Dragons’ singles player, going 7-6 in the number five spot. Sophomore Santiago Revelo (5-9 overall) has put up a 3-5 record at number six singles.
The Oilers have only played eight matches this season, going 4-4 overall, but they have yet to win in two GLIAC matches thus far. The Oilers are extremely young, with no upperclassmen on the roster at all.
Sophomore Kyle Collette has spent the season in the top slot for head coach Tomas Menec. Freshman Dawid Hebda is the in the number two singles slot. Freshman Josh Smedley is the number three singles’ player and classmates Bryan Simard and Brian Little make up the four and five spots, respectively. Sophomore David Brooks is the sixth singles player.
For the Huskies, junior David Heuer continues to get stronger as the season progresses, posting another win over the Lakers on Friday. He is now 7-4 on the season in the number three slot.
The top doubles pairing of sophomores Luka Stupar and Douglas Yossida improved their record to 7-8 on the season with their win on Friday.
The second doubles team of Heuer and sophomore Anders Sandholm also won Friday to improve their overall record to 7-5 on the season, and 7-4 when playing in the number two slot.
The Huskies will need more production from their lower-seeded players, Yossida, junior Chris Verhulst, and senior Tim Viola, in order to finally get a win or two in GLIAC play this weekend.
The Saturday match against Tiffin will be at 11 a.m. and the Sunday match will take place at 11 a.m. as well.

The 2010 season started with such promise, the men’s tennis Huskies opened with wins over Ripon College and Lakeland College before cruising to an 8-1 victory over U.P.-rival Lake Superior State. Lately, it seems that the wheels are falling off the bus, as the Huskies have dropped four matches in a row.
To be fair, the Huskies (6-7 overall, 0-4 GLIAC) have faced the cream of the GLIAC crop, falling to Grand Valley State and Ferris State two weekends ago before losing 5-4 to Wayne State on Friday and 8-1 on Saturday to No. 12 Northwood Timberwolves.
This weekend, the Huskies will travel to Sault Ste. Marie, MI, to face the Lake Superior State Lakers and hopefully get themselves back on the winning track.
The Lakers (5-8 overall, 1-3 GLIAC) has a slight edge over the Huskies heading into the match as they managed to earn a 5-4 win over Grand Valley State back on Mar. 21. Since then, the Lakers have fallen to Northwood, 7-2, and Wayne State, 6-3.
The top performer for the Lakers is sophomore Sergiu Laza at number two singles, where he’s posted an 8-5 record thus far. Junior Pawel Wegrzyn (5-8 overall), has played well at number three singles. Classmate Robert Nelson (6-6 overall) has also played strongly in the number six singles’ spot.
Sophomore Razvan Mag has struggled since taking over the top singles’ position, going 1-12 thus far. The fourth and fifth singles’ slots are filled regularly by junior Brandon Clayton and sophomore Travis Toth.
For the Huskies, junior David Heuer (6-4 overall) was the only Huskies’ player to earn a point from the Timberwolves, defeating Marcus Oliveira at number three singles. He is one of three Huskies with winning records at this point in the season.
Sophomore Luka Stupar lost both of his matches last weekend to fall to 6-7 on the second at number one singles. Sophomore Anders Sandholm earned a win at number two singles against the Warriors, but fell to the Timberwolves’ Frederic Schoelzel. He is now 7-6 on the season overall, and 7-5 in the second slot.
Sophomore Douglas Yossida (7-7 overall, 4-5 at number four singles) earned a three-set win on Friday, but fell on Saturday, to continue his .500 season. Junior Chris Verhulst (7-6 overall) improved to 4-5 at number five singles after winning on Friday.
Senior Tim Viola dropped both matches he played in over the weekend, falling to 6-6 overall and 4-4 while in the number six slot.

This weekend, the men’s tennis Huskies continue the GLIAC portion of their spring schedule by traveling downstate to face the Wayne State Warriors on Friday and the perennial GLIAC power, the Northwood Timberwolves, on Saturday.
The Huskies (6-5 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) will face a relatively untested Warriors (7-3 overall) squad on Friday. The Warriors boast an experienced lineup with three seniors and a couple of juniors.
Sophomore Bertrand Moulin is back as the top returning singles player after posting an 11-8 record last season. Junior Eric Szydlowski is the next strongest returning singles’ player, having posted an 8-15 record last season, splitting time between numbers three and four singles.
Senior Kevin Turnbull wasn’t overly impressive last season, going 2-9 in the number three slot. Classmate Roberto Gomez will likely move into the fourth position after posting a 7-7 record in the number five slot.
Senior Michael Savalle, juniors Marlon Leone and Peter Spina, and sophomore Will Nolan will all compete for the final two singles’ positions week in and week out, giving head coach Bryan Morrow plenty of depth to work with.
The Timberwolves (3-3 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) are off to a relatively slow start for themselves, but of those three lost matches, all three came against teams ranked No. 13 or better in the national rankings. They opened their GLIAC slate last Saturday with a 9-0 win over Tiffin.
Junior Peter Kazianschuetz (1-4 overall) is off to a tough start at number one singles. Senior Frederic Schoelzel (3-1 overall) has fared better at number two singles. Freshman Marcus Oliveira (1-4 overall) is still looking for his first win at the number three position.
Senior Max Dutois (3-2 overall) has posted a 2-2 record in the number four slot this season. Freshman Julian Freese and senior Michael Haas, along with Dutois have posted a combined 6-0 record at number five singles. Haas is 2-1 when playing at number six singles.
The Huskies are paced by sophomore transfer Luka Stupar (8-6 overall), who is 6-5 thus far in dual matches at number one singles. Sophomore Anders Sandholm (6-5 overall) continues to develop into a strong player for head coach Mike Axford, posting a 6-4 record at number two singles. Junior transfer David Heuer (5-3 overall) continues to play well in the third singles’ slot.
Sophomore Douglas Yossida (6-6 overall) has struggled a bit to figure out his game, going 3-4 in the fourth singles position. Junior Chris Verhulst (6-5 overall) has played well in fourth (3-0), but has struggled a bit at number five singles (3-4). Senior Tim Viola (6-4 overall) has been a pleasant surprise at number six singles, as he has a 4-2 record there along with a 2-1 record at number five singles.

Looking for a strong Spring Break trip to Orlando, Fla., the men’s tennis Huskies got just that, winning three of their five matches over four days. The Huskies started their trip with a 6-3 loss to St. Leo before defeating LeMoyne 8-1 and Dallas Baptist 5-4. They finished their trip with an 8-1 loss to Cumberland before posting an 8-1 win over Indianapolis.

Against St. Leo, the Huskies earned a single point in doubles’ play off the strong play of junior Chris Verhulst and senior Tim Viola at number three doubles. The duo needed a tiebreaker, but they earned the 9-8 (7-5) win over Michael Calloway and Tim Balz-Herrmann. The pair are 7-5 on the season.

In singles’ play, the Huskies notched points at numbers five and six.

Verhulst picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win over Michael Calloway at number five singles. Verhulst improved to 6-3 during the trip.

At number six singles, Viola earned a 6-4, 6-2, victory over Julian Jean-Pierre. Viola is now 6-3 on the campaign.

The Huskies jumped out to an early 3-0 lead over LeMoyne after sweeping all three doubles’ matches.

In singles’ play, the Huskies earned wins in straight sets from sophomore Luka Stupar at number one, sophomore Anders Sandholm at number two, junior David Heuer at number three, Verhulst at number four and freshman Andrew Kremkow at number five.

Viola forced a tiebreaker at number five singles, but couldn’t quite pull off the match win.

Getting strong play from their second and third doubles’ teams, the Huskies took a 2-1 lead into singles’ play, where the middle of the Huskies’ lineup shone.

Heuer earned a 6-2, 6-3, win over Richard Abel at number three singles. Heuer is 5-1 on the season.

Sophomore Douglas Yossida cruised to a 6-4, 6-0, victory over Nick French at number four singles. Yossida is 6-4 on the season thus far.

Verhulst needed three sets to dispatch Clint Baird, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Nothing went well for the Huskies against Cumberland, as they dropped all three doubles matches.

Stupar notched the lone Huskies’ point at number one singles over Mike Basler in a tiebreaker, 6-2, 5-7, 10-5. He improved to 8-4 during the trip.

The Huskies will now open their GLIAC Schedule down in Allendale, Mich., against Grand Valley State on Saturday. On Sunday, the Huskies will face Ferris State.

After starting their Spring Break trip to Orlando, Fla., with a win and a loss, the women’s tennis Huskies finished the same way, winning 5-4 over Olivet Nazarene on Monday, March 8, before falling 7-2 to Dallas Baptist on Tuesday, March 9.

The Huskies (14-6) earned two of three available points in doubles against Olivet Nazarene to take the early match lead before picking up three points in singles’ play. They managed to do all of this without junior Nathalia Rondelli in the lineup.

The number two pair of junior Asel Otunchieva and senior Danielle Stoll earned an 8-3 win over Claudia Voicu and Ashland Allison. The duo improved to 6-3 during the trip.
The top doubles team of sophomore Ploy Suthijindawong and freshman Kira Eck notched an 8-5 victory over Erica Engelbrecht and Taylor Stephens. The win came in the first match the pair played together. Suthijindawong picked up her second point of the match by defeating Voicu, 6-1, 6-3, at number one singles. The top Huskies’ player is now 21-1 on the season.

Eck followed her doubles’ partner’s lead, earning a 6-4, 6-1, win over Stephens at number four singles. Eck is now 6-7 on the season.

The other Huskies’ points came from freshman Chelsea Uganski at number five singles’, 6-3, 6-3, over Allison. Uganski is 2-2 on the season. Despite having Rondelli back against Dallas Baptist, the Huskies fell behind early, dropping all three doubles matches.
In singles’ play, the Huskies picked up points at numbers one and six singles.

Suthijindawong cruised to a 6-0, 6-1, straight set win over Natalie Holmes. Uganski earned her victory at number six singles by not surrendering a single game to Megan Billings, 6-0, 6-0.

The Huskies are now off as they wait to see if their record will be good enough to earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament later this spring.

While most students at Michigan Tech look forward to their Spring Break vacations in warmer climates than Houghton, MI, both the women’s and men’s tennis Huskies will be travelling to Florida, but neither team is going for pleasure.

The women’s tennis Huskies are set to play five matches in five days. They will face Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, St. Leo, Olivet Nazarene, Dallas Baptist, and Martin Methodist.

The Huskies faced the St. Leo Lions in 2007, winning 5-4. This season, the Lions are just 2-7 on the season, and they feature a squad with three seniors in Hannah Beard, Shaena Keefe, and Gina Schifano.

The Olivet Nazarene Tigers have a record of 5-7 on the season and are battling with a young squad led by three juniors in Alicia Cullen, Caitlin Dodge, and Erica Engelbrecht and no seniors.

Leading the Dallas Baptist Patriots is senior Jeanelle Stines along with juniors Natalie Holmes and Lisa Olian. The Patriots are 3-0 thus far this season.

The Martin Methodist Redhawks have a veteran squad this season with three seniors in Fidelina Diaz, Camilla Hovden, and Allison Winters. The Redhawks have only played one match this season.

The Huskies’ matches will take place between Saturday, Mar. 6, and Wednesday, Mar. 10.

The men’s tennis Huskies will also play five matches in five days, facing St. Leo, LeMoyne, Dallas Baptist, Indianapolis, and Martin Methodist.

The Huskies faced the St. Leo Lions in 2007, falling 8-1. This year, the Lions have compiled a 2-7 record. The Lions are a young squad, with no seniors and just two juniors in Pablo Chavez and Richard Maclachlan.

The LeMoyne Dolphins are just 1-5 on the season so far. The Dolphins boast an extremely young squad with no upperclassmen and eight sophomores on roster. The roster is made up almost entirely of New York-born players, with the exception being Andrew Gleason, who is from Gorham, Maine.

A veteran Dallas Baptist Patriots squad comes into their match against the Huskies with a 4-2 record. Three seniors, Nick French, Josh King, and Bronson Vaughan, lead the way.

Regional-rival Indianapolis is 5-3 on the season so far despite fielding a young team. The Greyhounds have just one senior in Werner Henning and one junior in Christian Nikou.

Seniors Matthew Dyer and Melvin Prada lead an experienced Martin Methodist Redhawks squad against the Huskies. The Redhawks have only played two matches thus far, however, going 1-1 in those matches.

The Huskies’ matches will take place between Sunday, Mar. 7, and Thursday, Mar. 11.
