Men’s Tennis punches their ticket to the GLIAC Tournament

After dropping five straight GLIAC matches, the men’s tennis Huskies head into the GLIAC Tournament riding high after sweeping this past weekend’s matches against Tiffin and Ferris State to finish their regular season 8-8 overall and 2-5 in the GLIAC, good for the sixth-seed this weekend.
With their sixth-seed placement, the Huskies will likely face either Wayne State or Ferris State in their opening match. Both the Warriors and the Bulldogs are 5-1 at this point in GLIAC play with one match to go. The Huskies lost 5-4 to the Warriors on Mar. 26, and 8-1 to Ferris State on Mar. 21.
The Warriors (13-6 overall) are paced by sophomore Bertrand Moulin (19-3 overall) who has posted a 14-2 record in dual matches this season in the number one spot. Senior Britton Steele (5-13 overall) has a 4-12 record in the number two slot. Freshman Thomas Ducret (13-5 overall) has posted a 13-2 record in the number three spot.
The fourth singles player, freshman Oscar Gamarra (9-8 overall) has an 8-7 record in dual matches. Senior Roberto Gomez (9-4 overall) has been the most effective fifth slot player with a record of 5-2 in dual matches. Freshman Jon Groszek (10-3 overall) has a 9-1 record at the number six spot.
For the Bulldogs (9-6 overall), Kyle Revall, a senior, leads the way, having posted a 6-7 record at number singles thus far this season. Classmate Ahmet Demir (7-7 overall) has a 6-6 record at number two singles. Sophomore Jack Swan (9-6 overall) at number three singles is 8-5 in dual matches.
Junior Steven Roberts (11-3 overall) has a 4-2 record at number four singles and a 6-1 record at number five singles. Sophomore Justin Hermes (6-8 overall) is 4-1 at number five singles but is 2-6 in the number four slot. Freshman Tyler Marengo (9-3 overall) is 8-2 in dual matches at number six singles.
Of course, should the Huskies survive their opening match with a win they will likely face No. 15 Northwood in the second round of the tournament. The Timberwolves (8-4 overall, 5-0 GLIAC) are limping a little bit after falling over the weekend to No. 20 Drury, 5-4.
For the Huskies, sophomore Luka Stupar (10-9 overall) continues to play strong tennis, going 8-8 in dual matches at number one singles. Sophomore Anders Sandholm (9-7 overall) is 9-6 at number two singles. Junior David Heuer continues to earn victories at number three singles as he is now 9-4 on the season.
Sophomore Douglas Yossida (9-8 overall) is now 6-6 in dual matches at number four singles. Junior Chris Verhulst (8-8 overall) is 3-0 at number four singles and 5-7 at number five singles. Senior Tim Viola (7-8 overall) has posted a 5-6 record in dual matches this season at number six singles.
The Huskies will be keeping an eye on the final four GLIAC matches over the next few days in order to find out who their first opponent will be. Wayne State faces Northwood on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Ferris State travels to Grand Valley State and Findlay faces Tiffin. Finally, Findlay faces Northwood on Thursday to finish the GLIAC Regular Season Schedule.

Men’s tennis looks to end skid

The 2010 season started with such promise, the men’s tennis Huskies opened with wins over Ripon College and Lakeland College before cruising to an 8-1 victory over U.P.-rival Lake Superior State. Lately, it seems that the wheels are falling off the bus, as the Huskies have dropped four matches in a row.
To be fair, the Huskies (6-7 overall, 0-4 GLIAC) have faced the cream of the GLIAC crop, falling to Grand Valley State and Ferris State two weekends ago before losing 5-4 to Wayne State on Friday and 8-1 on Saturday to No. 12 Northwood Timberwolves.
This weekend, the Huskies will travel to Sault Ste. Marie, MI, to face the Lake Superior State Lakers and hopefully get themselves back on the winning track.
The Lakers (5-8 overall, 1-3 GLIAC) has a slight edge over the Huskies heading into the match as they managed to earn a 5-4 win over Grand Valley State back on Mar. 21. Since then, the Lakers have fallen to Northwood, 7-2, and Wayne State, 6-3.
The top performer for the Lakers is sophomore Sergiu Laza at number two singles, where he’s posted an 8-5 record thus far. Junior Pawel Wegrzyn (5-8 overall), has played well at number three singles. Classmate Robert Nelson (6-6 overall) has also played strongly in the number six singles’ spot.
Sophomore Razvan Mag has struggled since taking over the top singles’ position, going 1-12 thus far. The fourth and fifth singles’ slots are filled regularly by junior Brandon Clayton and sophomore Travis Toth.
For the Huskies, junior David Heuer (6-4 overall) was the only Huskies’ player to earn a point from the Timberwolves, defeating Marcus Oliveira at number three singles. He is one of three Huskies with winning records at this point in the season.
Sophomore Luka Stupar lost both of his matches last weekend to fall to 6-7 on the second at number one singles. Sophomore Anders Sandholm earned a win at number two singles against the Warriors, but fell to the Timberwolves’ Frederic Schoelzel. He is now 7-6 on the season overall, and 7-5 in the second slot.
Sophomore Douglas Yossida (7-7 overall, 4-5 at number four singles) earned a three-set win on Friday, but fell on Saturday, to continue his .500 season. Junior Chris Verhulst (7-6 overall) improved to 4-5 at number five singles after winning on Friday.
Senior Tim Viola dropped both matches he played in over the weekend, falling to 6-6 overall and 4-4 while in the number six slot.

Men’s tennis travels to Wayne State and Northwood

This weekend, the men’s tennis Huskies continue the GLIAC portion of their spring schedule by traveling downstate to face the Wayne State Warriors on Friday and the perennial GLIAC power, the Northwood Timberwolves, on Saturday.
The Huskies (6-5 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) will face a relatively untested Warriors (7-3 overall) squad on Friday. The Warriors boast an experienced lineup with three seniors and a couple of juniors.
Sophomore Bertrand Moulin is back as the top returning singles player after posting an 11-8 record last season. Junior Eric Szydlowski is the next strongest returning singles’ player, having posted an 8-15 record last season, splitting time between numbers three and four singles.
Senior Kevin Turnbull wasn’t overly impressive last season, going 2-9 in the number three slot. Classmate Roberto Gomez will likely move into the fourth position after posting a 7-7 record in the number five slot.
Senior Michael Savalle, juniors Marlon Leone and Peter Spina, and sophomore Will Nolan will all compete for the final two singles’ positions week in and week out, giving head coach Bryan Morrow plenty of depth to work with.
The Timberwolves (3-3 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) are off to a relatively slow start for themselves, but of those three lost matches, all three came against teams ranked No. 13 or better in the national rankings. They opened their GLIAC slate last Saturday with a 9-0 win over Tiffin.
Junior Peter Kazianschuetz (1-4 overall) is off to a tough start at number one singles. Senior Frederic Schoelzel (3-1 overall) has fared better at number two singles. Freshman Marcus Oliveira (1-4 overall) is still looking for his first win at the number three position.
Senior Max Dutois (3-2 overall) has posted a 2-2 record in the number four slot this season. Freshman Julian Freese and senior Michael Haas, along with Dutois have posted a combined 6-0 record at number five singles. Haas is 2-1 when playing at number six singles.
The Huskies are paced by sophomore transfer Luka Stupar (8-6 overall), who is 6-5 thus far in dual matches at number one singles. Sophomore Anders Sandholm (6-5 overall) continues to develop into a strong player for head coach Mike Axford, posting a 6-4 record at number two singles. Junior transfer David Heuer (5-3 overall) continues to play well in the third singles’ slot.
Sophomore Douglas Yossida (6-6 overall) has struggled a bit to figure out his game, going 3-4 in the fourth singles position. Junior Chris Verhulst (6-5 overall) has played well in fourth (3-0), but has struggled a bit at number five singles (3-4). Senior Tim Viola (6-4 overall) has been a pleasant surprise at number six singles, as he has a 4-2 record there along with a 2-1 record at number five singles.

Huskies take down Timberwolves in GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinal, 78-52

With a 25-2 regular season behind them, the Huskies’ women’s basketball team began what many are hoping will be a long postseason run. Even though Michigan Tech earned the top seed in the GLIAC Tournament, Tuesday’s quarterfinal opponent, the Northwood Timberwolves, had challenged Michigan Tech to four- and eight-point margins earlier this year. This time was different. The Huskies stormed out of the gates and never looked back, earning a strong 78-52 victory over the injury-depleted T’Wolves.

Huskies’ men suffer 78-58 loss to Northwood

The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team came into tonight’s game against Northwood looking to build off its 13-point victory over Northern Michigan last Saturday. Huskies complete season sweep of Timberwolves with 72-64 road win

After defeating the Northwood Timberwolves 58-54 just 12 days ago, the Michigan Tech women’s basketball team faced the challenge of a rematch on the road. The Huskies were outshot and outrebounded in the four-point home victory, but they won both those categories (48-35 percent shooting, 38-37 in rebounding), on their way to a 72-64 GLIAC victory, their fourth straight conference win and eighth straight overall to start the season. Only the 1998-99 squad has started with more consecutive victories with 12.

Basketball men struggle down the stretch, fall to Northwood, 67-52

Everyone is aware of how young and inexperienced the Michigan Tech men’s basketball team is this year, but knowing that does not make it any easier to be patient through the growing pains, which were clearly evident today in the Huskies’ 67-52 loss at the hands of the Northwood Timberwolves.

Huskies improve to 5-0 with clutch 58-54 win over Northwood

It was not easy this time around, as the Michigan Tech women’s basketball team shot just 36 percent from the field and got out-rebounded 41-35, but the No. 1 Huskies proved their resiliency in their first close game of the year, making crucial free throws and making strong defensive stands down the stretch on their way to a 58-54 victory over the visiting Northwood Timberwolves.
